South Africa’s Strauss & Co. held their sale of South African art today scoring a new record for Irma Stern of 21m South African Rand (US$2.6m.) That price was just above the low estimate for the work. After the Stern record, it was a long way down to the next two Stern works. Followed by a Pierneef with a British royal provenance that did substantially better than its estimate. The top ten lots follow:
